IML Robots and their movie/TV-series counterparts:

C-3P0 and R2-D2
threepio and artoo

Threepio & Artoo

The most recognized robots in the film industry, C-3P0 and R2-D2 appeared in the movie Star Wars (1977) and its sequels and prequels.  See-Threepio was a protocol droid who claimed to be fluent in over six million forms of communication.  His counterpart, Artoo-Deetoo, was a plucky mechanical droid with a knack for getting himself electrocuted.

Cylon

After the success of Star Wars, a rush of movies and television shows attempted to cash in on the sci-fi craze, many of them featuring robots in one form or another.  The Cylons, appearing in the short-lived television series "Battlestar Galactica" (1979-80), were a belligerent race of robots bent on destroying humanity.

Gort

Gort, an alien robot from a technologically superior civilization, appeared in the science-fiction classic The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951).  Gort accompanied an alien named Klaatu on his voyage to Earth to warn humanity about the perils of war and nuclear weaponry.

Twiki

Twiki was a robotic sidekick to Buck Rogers in the television show "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" (1979-81), another product of the post-Star Wars glut.  Although Buck originally appeared in the "Buck Rogers" comic strip in the 1930s, Twiki was created solely for television

Bender

Originally designed to bend girders, Bender was an alcoholic, kleptomaniac robot from the TV cartoon series "Futurama" (1999-2003), a product of "The Simpsons" creater Matt Groening.  Bender served as a lazy, irresponsible employee of an interstellar package delivery company.
